January 2011 - Bake Your Game! →
Every January, the gang at SelectButton.net throws a good old-fashioned games bakedown. The rules are simple: you get the month of January to make a game. It’s a good time to ask questions and learn all kinds of useful stuff, and even as a passive observer it’s awesome seeing the different stuff people come up with in the creation of their games. Come join us and get baking!

Games as Journalism? →
WikiLeaks Stories — Game designers are encouraged to give the actual content of the cables leaked to Wikileaks the coverage that has been sorely lacking in traditional outlets. This is not a new trend — Gonzalo Fraca gained notoriety a few years back with his game September 12th, and even further back, during the golden age of arcades, we saw Missile Command, a bold statement on the...

Extra Mario Bros. is a Metroid tribute made in the Super Mario Bros. engine. running through a Metroid-like map with all the limitations of Mario (you can only...

this is the grant application for that workshop i’d mentioned in the previous post. my first ever grant app — it was terrifying at first!
oh, i'm so bad at keeping up!
it’s been awhile since my last update, and the fundraiser is just days from ending!
in my time away, i’ve gone on the radio (that recorded audio is floating around an office somewhere!), visited detroit for something else entirely, come home to find everything different from what i’d left behind, all while wondering what it is that really separates The Nicest People from Indie...

kickstarter project launched!
I’ve just relaunched The Nicest People on kickstarter! Back it if you can! Spread the word! Tell your grandmothers! This is a documentary that wants to happen, and it’s going to take all of our efforts to make it!
the new budget
$10,000. It’s actually more like $9,500, but Kickstarter takes 5% off the top. This is a far cry from the $22k I’d targeted last time out. Originally, I was aiming for a 3- or 4-person crew, a full set of lights, a boom mic, a shoulder-mounted camera (I was very self-conscious about the shaky shooting you can see in that trailer) and a van (these things drink gas).
The whole thing...
on the radio
I’ll be talking about The Nicest People on the air next Wednesday (June 9th), on Block 2 Block Radio, 91.5 fm in Silicon Valley. So, if you’re local, tune in! If you can’t catch the show, don’t worry — I’ll have a recording up before too long.
